The consented scheme allows for the construction of a single industrial unit (Use class B1, B2, B8), totalling 123,000ft2, which will incorporate warehouse space with offices on the first and second floors. The development will also have car-parking provision, a self-contained service yard and an associated scheme of soft landscaping (Planning Ref: 20\/0860C). The planning application was supported by an archaeological desk-based assessment, which outlined the archaeological considerations associated with the proposed development and concluded that a programme of non-invasive archaeological investigation may provide suitable information to evaluate the potential requirement for further investigation in advance of development. In the light of advice provided by the Cheshire Archaeology Planning Advisory Service, a condition was attached to planning consent that required a supervised metal detector survey to be carried out across the development area. This was intended to identify any metal objects that exist below the current ground level across the site, and establish whether any further archaeological investigation in advance of development is merited. In June 2020, Salford Archaeology was commission by C4 Projects Ltd to implement and deliver the required scheme of supervised metal-detector survey. This was carried out over a four-day period in late June 2020. In total, 343 objects were recovered from the fieldwork, with a combined weight of 11kg. Of this total, 194 objects were collected during the metal-detecting survey from positive detector readings and mainly consist of lead items as well as copper and ferrous materials. A further 149 objects were recovered from the surface of the field during the survey, and consisted mainly of pottery and clay tobacco pipe fragments.It is difficult to ascribe a firm date or intended function to many of the 125 lead objects with complete confidence, although it seems likely that they derived from Romano-British saltworking activity, representing fragments of objects such as salt pans. In addition, 14 sherds of Roman pottery were found on the surface of the field during the survey, providing furtherindication of Roman activity in the immediate vicinity. Other objects recovered from the metaldetector survey included two medieval hammered coins, an undated spindle whorl and three musket balls of probable 17th-century date. An interesting bronze find has been interpreted as a leg from a medieval cooking vessel. The lead objects were recovered from all parts of the study area, although particular concentrations were noted in a central belt, with a second concentration across the site close to the southern boundary. The density of finds was somewhat reduced in the northern part of the site and along the western boundary, where the ground level appeared to have been subject to some modern disturbance, although the rest of the site does not appear to have been subject to any significant ground disturbance. It is concluded from the survey that the development site has high potential to retain for below ground remains of archaeological interest, particularly those deriving from the Romano-British period, but also from the later medieval and Civil War periods. Whilst the upper levels of archaeological remains have probably been damaged by ploughing, it is likely deeply cut features may survive in-situ.
